Nigeria, with limited gender-focused inpatient data.
∙ Study Scope: Retrospective analysis of 286 psychiatric inpatients (2018–2024)
diagnosed with SUD at FMC Umuahia.

- Males predominated (69.2%) and were
more likely to engage in polysubstance use, especially alcohol and
cannabis.
- Females showed higher use of
prescription opioids and sedatives and greater psychiatric comorbidity,
notably depression and anxiety.
- Males had higher rates of discharge
against medical advice and relapse within six months.

Dr. Kazeem Abimbola Uthman is a Consultant Psychiatrist specializing in
addiction psychiatry and a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College
of Nigeria. With experience across both public and private sectors, he
currently serves as the Head of Psychiatry at FMC Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria,
contributing significantly to addiction treatment, research, and mental health
policy.
