Title: Quality Improvement Project: Enhancing Access to Addiction Services for Patients with Alcohol Use Disorder
🔍 Presentation Highlights
• Focus: Addressing the under-detection and under-treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD) among hospitalized patients.
• Background: AUD prevalence among hospitalized patients ranges from 7.4% to 48%, significantly higher than in the general population, yet referrals to addiction services remain low.
• Objective: To improve referral rates of patients with alcohol use disorder from the Gastroenterology ward to addiction counseling services.
• Methodology:
– Baseline analysis showed only 25 referrals between June 2022 and June 2023.
– Implemented a Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) quality improvement framework.
– Intervention focused on educating junior doctors about the importance of early referral.
• Results:
– Achieved a 32% increase in referral rates from July 2023 to July 2024.
– Total referrals increased to 33 cases post-intervention.
• Conclusion:
– The project demonstrated the effectiveness of interdepartmental collaboration.
– Highlights how targeted education can significantly enhance patient access to addiction services and overall quality of care.
