Understanding the Psychological Pathways Linking Screen Time and Depression

Presenter: Hei Wai Ma
Affiliation: Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Hong Kong
Presentation Type: Oral Presentation (In-Person & Online)

Presentation Title: The mediatingrole of personality problems in the relationship between screen time (internetaddiction) and depressive symptoms in young people

Session Overview: With the rapid increase in screen time and internet use among young adults, mental health concerns such as depression have become a growing global issue. While previous studies have established a link between internet addiction and depressive symptoms, the psychological mechanisms behind this relationship remain unclear. This presentation explores how personality problems may explain this connection.

Key Discussion Points

  • Examines the association between excessive screen time (internet addiction) and depressive symptoms
  • Investigates borderline and schizotypal personality traits as mediating factors
  • Uses validated psychological instruments including CIAS, PHQ-9, BSL-23, and SPQ-B
  • Study sample includes 116 young adults aged 18–25 years
  • Demonstrates partial mediation of personality problems in the screen time–depression relationship
  • Highlights the need for interventions beyond screen time reduction alone
  • Provides practical implications for mental health professionals and researchers

Research Significance

The findings suggest that focusing solely on reducing screen time may not adequately address depressive symptoms in young people. Targeted interventions addressing underlying personality problems may be essential for developing more effective mental health strategies.
