Title: The Relationship Between ADHD and Addictive Behaviours: A Review
π¬ Presentation Highlights
∙ Adult ADHD Reality:
ADHD frequently persists into adulthood and is often underdiagnosed.
∙ High-Risk Comorbidity: ADHD significantly increases the risk of substance use
disorders, behavioural addictions, mood disorders, and personality disorders.
∙ Bidirectional Link: ADHD symptoms such as impulsivity can drive addiction,
while chronic substance use may worsen ADHD symptoms.
∙ Behavioural Addictions: Strong associations with internet, shopping, and
other non-substance addictions.
∙ Clinical Complexity: Treating ADHD alongside substance use disorders remains
challenging, especially with stimulant medications.
∙ Treatment Insights: Emphasizes careful differentiation between ADHD patients
with and without stimulant/cocaine addiction.
∙ Screening Matters: Recommends routine cross-screening for ADHD and SUD in
both mental health and addiction services.
∙ Integrated Care: Highlights the importance of combining pharmacological
treatment with psychosocial interventions for better outcomes.
